It’s nearly Spring again! Time to get your wardrobe ready for the warmer seasons. As if this wasn’t enough cause for celebration, 2017 also marks our 50-year anniversary.

The Merc story reads a bit like a fashion fairy tale: it all starts when Javid Alavi opens a small market stall on Carnaby Street in 1967. A humble beginning but he knows what young people want to wear. His items hit a nerve and his shop soon becomes a hangout and meeting place for the Mod scene. The groundwork has been laid and success quickly follows. Since he finds, a lot of the designs he is envisioning aren’t around he soon starts selling his own products - the foundation for his own brand, Merc, and what is now half a century of unique and distinctive designs that emit coolness and class.

Today, we are proud to be part of the rich British fashion history and one of the most important brands for the subcultures, which are at the same time our biggest source of inspiration.

The Anniversary Collection

In honour of this year’s celebrations, we’re pleased to present a collection inspired by the styles and sounds of the 60s. An era of style icons who have shaped Britain’s culture and coined an unparalleled look. Fittingly modelled by The Rifles, the SS17 Collection brings together visually striking pieces with a relaxed yet functional feel. Music has always been at the centre of the subculture and at the heart of our brand, and The Rifles have long been a Merc favourite. The East London four-piece have been a regular on our playlist since our Carnaby Street days and we are truly honoured to support and continuously be supported by so many fantastically talented musicians.

As always, our modernist cuts and daring colours are at the centre of the line. This season, with the key colours red, white and blue – found, for example in the Nolan Monkey Jacket, a super smart take on a classic silhouette in blue, featuring red and white racer stripes on one side.

Key Pieces, picked by our design team

With plenty of statement pieces to choose from this season, we had our lovely, talented design team pick five of their favourites so you’re not completely stumped for choice.

The HARRINGTON FIFTY in Black

Our Harrington Jacket is one of the items, which have been around right from the start and which have not decreased in popularity in all of 50 years - which says a lot about a product. The Harrington Jacket therefore holds a special place in our hearts. So we thought it would only be appropriate to give it a special place in our anniversary collection too. The HARRINGTON FIFTY is a limited edition of our classic Core Range version, with exclusive trims and details. It features a subtle applique with our iconic crown emblem to the chest and a large Union Jack print on our signature tartan lining, together with a reminder of the year Merc became a byword for style.

The BAKER Field Jacket

A very welcome addition to our timeless mod-style outerwear: The BAKER is our take on the M65 Jacket. The unrivalled value offered by this garment can be boiled down to several core qualities, including: enduring construction, timeless aesthetic, and pure versatility. Given its deep history and the context of its application, it should come as no surprise that this straight-front jacket is built to last. The versatile piece not only convinces with durability and practicality but also with its design – the flat cargo pockets, high neck, concealed hood and long sleeves will ensure that you stay covered up in style wherever you go.

The UPTON Knitted Polo

The Polo Shirt was part of the first chapter of the Merc story. Reimagined with different design details each season, it remains at the core of each of our collections. With strong links to European tailoring and the designs of the 60s, the UPTON Polo with its bold vertical stripes and full button placket is about being a different kind of smart.

The CASPIAN Geo Print Shirt

This anniversary collection includes many contemporary interpretations of our very first pieces. A celebration of enduring style, designed with refined colours and textures. The CASPIAN is an adaptation of our classic button-down shirt with an all-over retro geo print for bold, exaggerated styling. Finished with the Merc crown emblem proudly embroidered to the chest.

The FITCH Scooter Print Polo in NAVY

For the FITCH we reworked our classic Polo design with details borrowed straight from the subculture. Classic elements include the 3-button placket, classic collar and 2Tone twin tipping. The front-panel scooter print is a reference, of course, to the Mods favourite accessory.

50 Years of Modernism
